Trichomoniasis, often referred to as “trich,” is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. It primarily affects the urogenital tract, particularly in women, and can cause symptoms such as itching, burning, redness, or soreness of the genitals, as well as discomfort during urination or intercourse. Women may also experience a frothy, yellow-green vaginal discharge with a strong odor. In men, trichomoniasis is often asymptomatic, but it can cause irritation inside the penis, mild discharge, or discomfort after urination or ejaculation.

Trichomoniasis is spread through vaginal, oral, or anal sex, and because many people don’t show symptoms, it can be unknowingly transmitted between partners. If left untreated, trichomoniasis can increase the risk of contracting other STIs, including HIV. For pregnant women, it can lead to complications such as preterm delivery or low birth weight.

Treatment is straightforward and involves a single dose of antibiotics, typically metronidazole or tinidazole. It’s important that both partners are treated simultaneously to avoid reinfection. Practicing safe sex and regular STI screenings are key to preventing and managing trichomoniasis.
