Acute gout is a sudden and severe form of arthritis caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints, leading to intense pain, swelling, and redness. The condition typically affects the big toe but can also occur in other joints such as the ankles, knees, or wrists. The onset of pain is often abrupt, occurring at night or early in the morning, and the affected joint becomes very sensitive, sometimes to the point where even the touch of a sheet can be excruciating. Other symptoms may include warmth and stiffness in the joint. Acute gout attacks are often triggered by factors such as high-purine foods, alcohol consumption, dehydration, or stress. Treatment involves anti-inflammatory medications, lifestyle changes, and medications to lower uric acid levels.
